headspace Cannington is a free and confidential service that offers support to 12–25-year-olds, with mild to moderate struggles. Conveniently located near Westfield Carousel on Albany Highway.

headspace Cannington is operated by Arche Health. All headspace services are funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. Administration of funding is carried out by the headspace centre’s local Primary Health Network, in this case, WA Primary Health Alliance (WAPHA).

Services

Mental health workers – which may include psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and other workers – that can help if you're just not feeling yourself.

Are you a friend or family member of a young person going through a hard time?  

Are you a community member with an interest or passion for mental health and other youth related issues?   

Then we want you to join our FAMILY & FRIENDS REFERENCE GROUP (FFRG)

Our FFRG meet monthly to discuss all things youth mental health and how we can best support our youth community and their families. As a collective: we listen, we learn and provide advice that guides the continuous development of headspace Cannington services.

As part of the Family and Friends Reference group you will:

  • Engage and work with families and friends
  • Help with projects and events that support parents, families and friends
  • Have input into strategies and campaigns that target family and friends  
  • Develop new skills 
  • Meet and work with other people who are passionate about youth mental health 
  • Attend consortium meetings
  • Make a difference to youth mental health through media and promotion.

Commitment: We appreciate that everyone lives busy lives so official meetings are limited to monthly. We also communicate regularly via emails, and through our private FFRG Facebook page/messenger group. Training will be provided, and development opportunities offered.

The Role

The purpose of the Centre Manager position is to lead, develop, implement, oversee and manage the operations, and the future growth and development of the headspace centre. They will be a highly motivated and capable person who will facilitate excellence in integrated, holistic health care, with the goal of improving outcomes for clients of the service and the wider community. 

The incumbent will work closely and collaboratively with a range of stakeholders to ensure all activities are in accordance with the headspace grant agreement, and direction provided by the lead agency, headspace National Office, consortium partners and the Youth Reference Group. 

The Centre Manager will have extensive experience at managing multidisciplinary teams.

SELECTION CRITERIA – QUALIFICATION, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

Qualifications and Registrations

Essential

  • Degree level qualifications in Allied Health, Behavioural/Social sciences, Youth Work, Mental Health Nursing, or a related discipline.

Desirable

  • Post graduate qualifications in business or health services management.
  • Recognised industry related certifications and registrations. 

 

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience at effectively leading and reporting on complex planning and community service development environments.
  • Demonstrated experience at managing and developing operational systems for a health or community services organisation, including effectively planning and allocating resources in order to maximise operational efficiency and meet funding deliverables. 
  • A broad understanding of mental health and social services sector within WA with appreciated knowledge of relevant legislations pertaining to child health services. 
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment in working inclusively with hard to reach, culturally and gender diverse vulnerable communities.  
  • Demonstrated experience at managing all aspects of staff and team performance, including recruitment, staff orientation, supervision, performance reviews, staff disciplinary action, performance development and team building.
  • Experience in direct service provision to young people and providing mental health services or programs, including being able to respond effectively to crisis and high risk situations.
  • Proven track record in building and maintaining effective working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders and consortium partners to build integrated model of care whilst promoting multidisciplinary teamwork.
  • Experienced in overseeing and convening committees associated with community service program, including organising and participating in committee meetings, preparing agendas, minutes, papers and correspondence. 

Desirable

  • Experience working in the not-for-profit or non-government community service sector.
  • Experience in private practice settings.

 

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Demonstrated capacity to effectively engage in leadership and management processes, including rolling out multidisciplinary and/or cross sector initiatives, and partnerships with a wide range of professionals, organisations and stakeholders.
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of people and professionals.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of accountability systems and continuous quality improvement processes, including the utilisation of data systems, the development and implementation of policies and procedures, and the use of evaluation and risk management tools.
  • Detailed understanding of the Australian health care system, particularly the primary health and mental health areas, including the range of professionals and organisations that work within, or come into contact with the sector.
  • Capability to work effectively with private practitioners to ensure issues are identified and resolved to maintain sustainable service delivery. 
  • Demonstrated experience in developing centre strategic and work plans in conjunction with seniors’ management, consortium partners and consumers to ensure deliverables and key performance indicators are achieved.   
  • Ability to prioritise and manage multiple and competing work tasks and deliver to agreed deadlines.
  • Advanced computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets and database applications.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a productive team member.
  • A broad understanding of the challenges and experiences of young people in Australia, including socio-economic determinants of health impacting their local communities.

Parents, Family, Carers and Friends

If you are the family member, carer or friend of a young person and wish to refer them to headspace Cannington, you are welcome to call us during our business hours to discuss options. Please ensure that the young person who you are referring is willing to engage with headspace and can attend appointments.

If you are a service provider, health professional, or from a school and wish to refer a young person to headspace Cannington, please complete our Service Provider Referral Form. Prior to completing the form, please ensure that you have obtained the young person's consent and provide as much information as possible so that headspace Cannington’s Triage Officer can determine the suitability and the most appropriate treatment options for the young person. headspace Cannington will contact the young person and inform you thereafter of the outcome of your referral with us.

What is headspace Cannington offering the community in 2024?
headspace Cannington provides FREE and confidential mental health, alcohol and drug, physical health (including sexual health) and work and study support for young people 12 – 25. In addition to in-house services, our Community Engagement team provide a range of outreach services and programs.

headspace Cannington offers FREE workshops and presentations that include a range of practical evidence-based content, interactive activities and videos. Workshops generally go for 45 minutes. 

Our presenters use safe and inclusive language and are happy to discuss any specific concerns or requests you may have when booking a presentation.

Palmerston is located in Perth metropolitan, Peel, the South-West and Great Southern regions of Western Australia. Palmerston offers face to face counselling at headspace. Cannington.

YCATT: Youth Community Assessment and Treatment Team is a community outreach service that uses a client-centered, recovery-focused approach to youth mental health. 

CentreCare: is a well-respected Catholic not-for-profit organisation providing a variety of counselling and professional social services inspired by compassion and respect for human dignity. CentreCare offers face to face counselling at headspace. Cannington.

Neami National: provides mental health, homelessness and suicide prevention support and work to strengthen local communities. 

Communicare: aim to create community inclusion and community safety by working collaboratively with individuals, families and communities to facilitate social and economic inclusion for all and establish and sustain safe and healthy communities. Communicare will run workshops from headspace Cannington.

WA Child Safety Services: WA Child Safety Services is Western Australia’s only not-for-profit provider of Protective Behaviours, Cyber Safety, Child Protection and Teen Talk programs and resources. We work alongside families, schools, and organisations to help prevent child abuse.

City of Canning: The City’s Youth Development team provides a range of support programs, activities, events and opportunities for young people to connect, create, chill and upskill.

MercyCare: provide young Western Australians and their families with safe and supportive access to wellbeing and mental health services and accommodation options. Available for counselling at headspace Cannington

APM: services focus on enhancing an individual’s employability, health and wellbeing, and social and economic participation in their community. 

Helping Minds: free and confidential counselling to people in WA who are supporting a family member or a friend living with mental health challenges
