About

headspace Elsternwick offers young people aged 12-25 access to mental health and wellbeing support in a welcoming and friendly environment. We have an onsite youth friendly GP for physical and sexual health needs, an alcohol and other drug counsellor and work and study support.

At headspace Elsternwick we provide inclusive services and safe spaces for young people and the people they care about. Our Centre is located within walking distance of Elsternwick Train Station.

Appointments are free or low cost and can be made by calling our reception team on (03) 9076 7500. A friend, family member or someone you trust can also call on your behalf. Alternatively, you can email us at headspaceelsternwick@alfred.org.au or visit us at the Centre.

headspace Elsternwick is operated by Alfred Health. All headspace services are funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. Administration of funding is carried out by the headspace centre’s local Primary Health Network, in this case, South Eastern Melbourne (South East Melbourne PHN).

If you live near our headspace centre in a rural area but cannot travel in to see us, you can see our mental health workers online.

headspace Elsternwick and Bentleigh are seeking motivated and experienced General Practitioners with an interest in youth mental health to work on a part time basis.

About headspace:
headspace is a National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 years old.  This service is designed to make it as easy as possible for a young person and their family to get the help they need for problems affecting their wellbeing.  This covers four core areas: mental health, physical health, work and study support, alcohol and other drug services.

About the Opportunity:

We are seeking youth-focused General Practitioners (fully registered) with an interest in youth mental health to join headspace services at two headspace centres based in Elsternwick and Bentleigh. You will have access to flexible working arrangements and be fully supported by a team consisting of Clinical Lead, Practice Administrator, Intake Team and Reception Staff.

What we can offer:

What is the YAC?

The headspace Elsternwick Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) provides young people with the opportunity to have a voice at headspace Elsternwick and to feel empowered to take positive action that will improve mental health and wellbeing for local young
people.


If you're aged 16 to 25, are passionate about mental health and issues impacting young people, and want to join an amazing team of like-minded advocates, apply today!

What's involved? 

  • Be an active advocate for youth mental health in your local community.
  • Plan, support and lead diverse and exciting headspace activities, events and projects.
  • Provide input and feedback on headspace services, processes and initiatives.
  • Engage in a range of mental health training and professional development opportunities
  • & much more!

We're looking for volunteers who:

  • Are 16-25 years.
  • Live in or around Elsternwick or surrouding areas.
  • Have an interest and passion in local youth issues such as youth health, mental health, LGBTIQA+, homelessness and/or alcohol and other drug issues (this could also include a personal lived experience or supporting a family member/friend).
  • Can participate in fortnightly YAC meetings which will be held in person at the centre, for 1.5 hours on a Thursday.
  • Have capacity for minimum 5 hours a week commitment.

headspace Elsternwick offers young people aged 12 to 25 access to mental health professionals for counselling and support.

Our services are free or low cost, and we will ensure that your privacy and confidentiality is maintained and respected.

With a Mental Health Treatment Plan - a formal document completed with a GP (Doctor) - you can access up to 10 Medicare funded sessions in any calendar year (Jan - Dec). 

Please speak with our team if you are concerned about the possible cost of seeing a mental heath clinician. Our team can also provide you with advice on how to obtain a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

headspace Early Psychosis offers specialist support for young people who are experiencing, or are at an increased risk of developing psychosis.

Psychosis is an experience where a person interprets the world differently to others. They might see or hear things that other people can’t, or have unusual ideas or beliefs. This can affect their thoughts, feelings or behaviour.

Our team is here to support young people and their families navigate this experience and take steps towards recovery.

The Early Psychosis program operates seven days a week (including public holidays) and also provides access to mental health professionals, study and work support, group activities and help for family and friends.

To be eligible for the program, young people will be assessed by our team.

In South East Melbourne, there are five headspace centres that work closely together to offer this program including headspace Bentleigh, Elsternwick, Frankston, Dandenong and Narre Warren.

Sometimes it's not just young people who could benefit from speaking to someone. At headspace Elsternwick we offer counselling for the whole family.

Your family can access counselling even without a young person engaged in services. Sessions are one hour with a maximum of two per family. Family sessions are no cost to you, and a Medicare card is not required to access these sessions.

Is there a volunteer program at headspace Elsternwick? 

Yes. Young people aged 18-25 can volunteer with headspace Elsternwick to help improve the mental health and wellbeing of their community. 

The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is a group of young people that develops and delivers community events and projects, as well as providing feedback to headspace Elsternwick on how to improve mental health services. YAC members have the opportunity to expand their skills and knowledge in advocacy, public speaking, events and mental health.

No, unfortunately we don't offer work experience opportunities.

All of our services are low or no cost. Some services require a Medicare card, and other services can be accessed without one. It is always worth discussing your circumstances with us.

TRAIN

headspace Elsternwick is a short walk from Elsternwick train station, which is on the Sandringham line. Exit the train station to the right and continue walking along Glenhuntly Road until you see the green headspace sign. 

TRAM

The number 67 tram runs along Glen Huntly Road. It starts in Carnegie and terminates at Melbourne University. Stop 45 is Elsternwick Shopping Centre/Glen Huntly Road and stop 44 is Elsternwick Railway Station. View the Yarra Tram Melbourne Network Map. 

BUS

There are several bus routes operating within a short walk from headspace Elsternwick. We recommend using the PTV Journey Planner.  

CAR

One hour parking is available on Glen Huntly Road. Two or four hour unmetered parking is available on St Georges Road and Railway Parade.
