headspace - Providing FREE confidential health services for young people aged 12 - 25 across Mackay region.

headspace  is about making sure young people have the best support, information, and services for their health and wellbeing including physical health, mental health, drug and alcohol issues, employment and education support.

Call us on (07) 4898 2200, drop-in to Level 2, 123 Victoria St during our opening hours, Monday to Friday from 8.30am - 4.30pm or ask your GP for a referral to headspace  Mackay.

headspace Mackay is operated by Northern Australia Primary Health Limited. All headspace services are funded by the Australian Government Department of Health. Administration of funding is carried out by the headspace centre’s local Primary Health Network, in this case, Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN).

Services

Get tips on how to prepare your resume and present for interviews. Find out about local employment opportunities (full time, part-time, or casual).

Workers either on site or linked to the centre who can assist you with any alcohol or other drug issue. 

Centres have a range of programs and activities for young people. Just ask your centre what they have on. 

Mental health workers – which may include psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and other workers – that can help if you're just not feeling yourself.

A group of young people who help with events and some decision making at a centre. Ask your centre about getting involved.

You will:

  • Provide high quality clinical care across the lifespan for various psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, and other common disorders.
  • Conduct biopsychosocial assessment, case formulation and treatment planning for psychological problems
  • Conduct risk assessments and risk management planning.
  • Participate in clinical case review meetings, supervision and multi-disciplinary team meetings to ensure high quality service delivery.
  • Contribute to strategic thinking that supports and promotes the headspace model as well as NAPHL's work and goals within the Mackay community of health service providers.
  • Support productive working relationships through the development and maintenance of effective internal and external relationships, partnerships and networks.

 

Essential Criteria:

  • Current registration with AHPRA
  • Possess a Medicare Provider Number or able to acquire as soon as possible and maintain eligibility to provide headspace services.
  • Are autonomous and self-directed with exceptional clinical and therapeutic skills;
  • Passionate about working with young people and their families;
  • Ability to work well within a team environment, and to develop and maintain professional relationships with other service providers and within the team.

 

Reporting to the Clinical Lead, you need to be flexible and responsive to meet the needs of the clients, the team and the demands of the service.

  • Provide recovery orientated, trauma informed as well as trauma specific care based on the core principles of Safety, Trustworthiness, Choice, Collaboration and Empowerment.
  • Provide high quality clinical care across the lifespan for young people with single incident trauma or complex trauma presentations.
  • Conduct biopsychosocial assessment, case formulation and treatment planning for psychological problems.
  • Conduct risk assessments and risk management planning.
  • Participate in clinical case review meetings, supervision and multi-disciplinary team meetings to ensure high quality service delivery.

How do I refer a young person to headspace?

Self-referral or without formal referral

If you are aged 12 - 25 years, you can make a referral by contacting us on 07 4898 2200.

Family, Carers & Friends

Family, carers and friends are welcome to refer on behalf of a young person with their consent. You can do this by contacting us on 07 4898 2200. 

Service Providers & Schools

If you are wanting to refer a young person and have their consent, please complete our Service Provider and Schools Referral Form and fax to 07 4898 2299.

General Practitioners

Please complete our General Practitioner (GP) Referral Form and fax to 07 4898 2299.

If you are aged 12 - 25 there is no wrong way to access headspace Mackay. You can call the centre, drop in during business hours or talk to your Doctor about a referral.

Promoting good mental health and wellbeing of young people in the Mackay region.

The headspace Community Network (hCN) consists of a group of very dedicated community volunteers passionate about improving social and emotional wellbeing outcomes for our local youth. 

Are you aged 26 and above and want to get involved as a volunteer?

By getting involved you will:

  • Have the opportunity to have your say and direct youth mental health services in Mackay
  • Develop new skills, meet new people
  • Meet and work within the community and be passionate about youth mental health 
  • Make a difference to youth mental health in your community

Are you aged between 14 and 25 and live in Mackay or surrounds? Do you have something to say about health, mental health, and drug and alcohol issues?

We want you to apply if: 

  • You feel passionate about and are interested in mental health issues and;
  • You have had lived experience of mental health issues, know someone who has/had mental health issues; or
  • You have a friend or family member who has/had a mental illness or drug addition

To be fully representative of our local youth, the voices of Indigenous young people, young people from different cultural backgrounds, young people from rural and remote areas, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender young people and young people who have been homeless are encouraged to apply.

headspace Mackay has a number of groups that provide a safe and friendly space for you to get to meet new friends, develop skills, and generally have fun! No fees involved!

 Social Groups:

  • Gotcha Girls - for young people who identify as female aged 12-25, Dates/Times tbd, contact Carmen for more information.

 

  • Rainbow Alliance Group - for young people aged 15-25 who identify as gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, intersex, transgender or questioning their sexual or gender orientation, Dates/Times tbd, contact Ricky for more information.
