Elephant in the Room- October 2017

EiTR flyer Oct 2017

Elephant in the Room is a 4-week group program for the family and friends of young people with a mental health concern. Elephant in the Room aims to build the skills and confidence of families and friends to support their young person. This is achieved through:

  • Psycho-education about youth mental health and the caring role
  • Communication and crisis management skills building
  • Developing support networks
  • Fostering hope for the future
  • Access to lived experience of other carers and consumers

Using these tools to grow resilience in the family assists in reducing the family’s mental distress and assists them to create a supportive environment in the family home, which then in turn reduces recurrences of family breakdown. Elephant in the Room aims to increase mental health and emotional literacy to reduce barriers to early access and help seeking.
Feedback from past participants:
“Very insightful and useful information. [Facilitators] were excellent as were the experiences provided by the other attendees.”
“It was very well-structured and allowed us to touch on several different topic areas. I didn’t know I had so many options to turn to for support.”
“Great session leaders. Interesting and comprehensive workshops. Doubtful at first but I learned much more than I initially realised.”
