Our Diverse City

Our Diverse City is a celebration of the LGBTIQA+ young people that we support in our centres, and aims to raise awareness and empower these young people in our communities. Each of the young people featured below are part of the Youth Reference Groups from headspace Ipswich, Meadowbrook, Nundah & Woolloongabba, and alongside their image, have shared advice for their younger self.

During the last financial year, over 25% of the young people we supported in our centres identified as LGBTIQA+. Yesterday we launched Our Diverse City across our social media channels. This campaign is a celebration of every single one of these young people and aims at raising awareness and empowering the young LGBTIQA+ people in our communities.

The young people featured in this campaign are Youth Reference Group members who identify with the LGBTIQA+ community from our headspace centres in Ipswich, Meadowbrook, Nundah & Woolloongabba. Underneath their photo, each person also provided a quote to help inspire or give advice to other young people who might be struggling with their gender or sexuality.

For LGBTIQA+ young people that are looking for some extra support and want to learn more about their community, mental health and a range of other topics, we run our Diverse City group at each of our headspace centres. Get in touch with your local centre to learn more about when the next group starts!

“Happiness is possible, and inevitably you will find it! As you find your place in the world, you'll also find people who will love you for who you are and will care for you like family. Happiness and acceptance are closer than you think, because love will always triumph."

“Change is going to be scary but coming from a place of experience, I can say that you will definitely be happier in the long run if you are more true to yourself and how you want to be than how you want others to see you.”

"Other people's happiness is not worth more than your own. Your life is your’s so do what makes you happy and don’t waste the time you have on people who ruin your happiness.”

“Just be yourself and be happy with who you are and don't listen to the haters"

“Being Transgender is a beautiful and wondrous thing. Take pride in who you are.”

“Don’t think that coming out HAS to be something you have to do to define your sexuality. You define yourself on your own terms and those that love you won’t be opposed to who you are.”
